I have Windows 95/98 (first edition) and the external USB writer is recognised :

• The Plextor USB CD writers require a USB1.1 interface as minimum to work (4X Write, 6X Read). The drivers to support this USB 1.1 are available starting from Windows 98 SE and greater.
• Plextor recommends to use his external USB devices with a USB 2.0 controller and Windows 98 SE or greater, this to become the full performance of the device.
