- How come that the Plextor drive does not get power?
On ATAPI systems:
- The Power connector is not attached or malfunctioning. When the Computer's power is turned ON (no CD/DVD in the plexwriter), the Plexwriters LED should be illuminated briefly and then extinguished. After startup on Atapi models, the green light should be OFF when no CD is loaded and ON permanently when the CD is loaded.
On SCSI systems:
- The Power connector is not attached or malfunctioning. When the Computer's power is turned ON (no CD in the plextor), the Plextor ON LED should illuminate. When a CD is loaded, the DISC-LED should be on. The ON-LED is flashing when reading the CD is in progress. The L-LED and H-LED indicate that Low-speed or High-speed writing is in progress.
On USB systems:
- The Power connector is not attached or malfunctioning. Important: use only the supplied adaptor to power the USB drive, other power adaptors may damage the drive which is not covered in warranty.
- The power supply is not connected and/or plugged in. When the power is on and no USB cable connected you should be able to open and close the tray using the eject button. When the USB-drive is connected and powered on, the green led should be on permanently, regardless if there is a CD loaded or not.
On USB-slim line devices, like PX-S88TU and PX-S2410TU the LED is flashing when powering on and is extinguished when the CD is loaded.

- How come that my drive is not recognised when power is applied?
On ATAPI systems:
-Ensure that the IDE controller is enabled and set to AUTO detection in the motherboard's BIOS.
-Check the jumper settings for the Plexwriter and your other IDE devices. Ensure the jumper for one device is set to Master and the other to Slave.
- Do not use the CSEL option unless the motherboard supports the Cable Select option and a special cable is used.
-It is recommended to use the secondary MASTER position to have the best performance.
-Ensure you installed the latest IDE driver for the IDE controller on the motherboard, this can be found on the website of the manufacturer of the motherboard.
-The red wire of the grey IDE cable should be connected to pin 1(check on the label of the unit) of the Plextor drive.
On SCSI systems:
-Ensure you have the latest SCSI drivers installed for your SCSI controller, the updated drivers can be downloaded from the manufacture's website.
-Make sure you only terminated the devices at the end of the SCSI chain.
-Check if there are no hardware conflicts with other devices in your computer. (Yellow marks in your device manager)
-Is the red wire of the SCSI cable connected to pin 1 of the drive?
On USB systems:
Windows 95/98/NT 4.0
-The Plextor writers require a USB1.1 interface as minimum to work (4X Write, 6X Read) this USB 1.1 support is available since W98SE or later
Windows 98SE/Me
-Make sure the USB interface is enabled in your BIOS settings.
-Verify that your USB cable has been inserted properly.
-Make sure that you have the most recent ASPI layer installed, for more info please consult the ASPI page.
-Verify that the correct and latest chipset drivers have been installed.
-For Win98SE: install the USB driver that is delivered with the unit, on the Software Utilities -CD you will find the correct USB driver.
Windows 2000
-Make sure the USB interface is enabled in your BIOS settings.
-Verify that your USB cable has been inserted properly.
-Make sure that you have the most recent ASPI layer installed, for more info please consult the ASPI page.
-Verify that the correct and latest chipset drivers have been installed.
-Make sure you have administrator rights or logged on as administrator.
Windows XP
-Make sure the USB interface is enabled in your BIOS settings.
-Verify that your USB cable has been inserted properly.
-Make sure that you have the most recent ASPI layer installed, for more info please consult the ASPI page.
-Verify that the correct and latest chipset drivers have been installed.
-Make sure you have administrator rights or logged on as administrator.

- Why is the performance of my SCSI CD-ROM poor with the Adaptec 19160 controller?
- Make sure you install the latest Adaptec drivers and BIOS version for this controller. The updates can be downloaded from the Adaptec webpage www.adaptec.com
- When you are using the native Windows drivers for this controller you can disable "Domain validation" in the BIOS of your controller.

- Plextor PX-708A and ultra ATA PCI controllers (Promise, etc...)
The Plextor devices are designed to be used on a standard IDE controller on the secondary port as master device if possible.
The ultra ATA PCI controllers are designed for hard disc usage, your Plextor drive will not function correctly on these controllers.

- Can I install my Plextor PX-708A into an external usb2.0 / Fire Wire box?
The Plextor internal units are designed to operate inside a pc connected to a normal IDE controller port.
Should you experience any problem with such a setup in an external usb2.0/FW box.
We can advice you to either purchase the PX-708UF (the external version of the PX-708A) or to contact the manufacturer of the external box so they can resolve your problem.

- The Pinnacle Studio 9 software that is bundled with the PX-712A does not recognise the serial number mentioned on the CD, it is mentioned as PA-266

The serial number of the Pinnacle software will be replied to you as soon as possible.

- Is the PX-712SA, with serial ATA interface, compatible with every Motherboard that has SATA interface ?
The PX-712SA works on most motherboards when equipped with Serial ATA interface (SATA), however, one should check with the manufacturer of the motherboard if the SATA supports optical devices. In some cases the SATA controllers do need a BIOS upgrade to support optical devices other controllers do not support it at all.
